What is water hammer?
Water hammer (often manifesting as the "banging" of water pipes) is caused by the
sudden stopping of a volume of flowing water, whereby the kinetic energy is converted into pressure that can rise to very high values.
In most cases, the problem arises when the flow is stopped by quick-closing valves, such as those found in all kinds of water-consuming machines and appliances. The water tries to find a balance in the plumbing system. Dishwashers,
washing machines, and quick-closing faucets can cause water hammer. This creates the
annoying sound of banging, rattling pipes, but there is also a risk of
leaking pipe connections or damage to appliances.
